Commemorate the Anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday

It is hard to believe that a decade has passed since September 11, 2001.

It is hard to believe that a decade has passed since Sept. 11, 2001 – a day that is forever etched in most Americans’ memories. For me it seems like both yesterday and a lifetime ago. We all have a story to tell from that day and everyone was affected in their own unique way. Similarly, in some way unique to each of us, we should commemorate the lives of those we lost and the bravery of the many heroes who selflessly put others before themselves.

We are fortunate to have a very moving 9/11 Memorial here in Avon Lake. Thanks to Mr. Gjergj Haxhiu, the Avon Lake Key Club, the Avon Lake Kiwanis Club and many community groups and residents, the Garden of Empowerment at the high school honors the memory of the innocent people killed that Tuesday morning, as well as three brave sons of Avon Lake lost while serving their Country.

Beginning at 8:45 am this September 11th, Key Club members will read the names of the 2,819 victims from a decade ago. A bugler from American Legion Post 211 will sound Taps at 8:46 am, when World Trade Center Tower #2 was struck in New York City, at 9:03 am, when World Trade Center Tower #1 was struck, at 9:37 am when the Pentagon was struck just outside of Washington, D.C., and at 10:03 am, when the passengers of United Flight 93 saved countless others in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

While we all have unique feelings stemming from the atrocities that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, we do share a common responsibility – to never forget, to honor those taken too soon and to ensure that such a nightmare never occurs again. I am appreciative of the hard work of the many people that made the Garden of Empowerment a reality and hope to see you there on Sunday morning.
