How To Transform Outdoor Spaces For Summer

In just a few minutes you too can Re-Design your outdor living space for little or no investment!

There are several “tricks” that homeowners can use to transform outdoor living spaces in summer. Creating a warm & homey room outdoors adds to ones living space.

We so often have patios, porches & decks that are not fully utilized. Lazy summer days spent on a front porch can be even more relaxing when certain details are added. We will explore the idea of blurring the line between inside & out. One of our first concerns is the weather. There are wonderful products that are weather resistant. Furniture, rugs, cushions and more can be easily found at patio stores and the internet. I recommend www.grandinroad.com.

First, look at your “bones.” What are the floors, walls and ceiling made of, can you change the color? Using area rugs,(not throw rugs), will instantly transform an old tired floor. The use of an area rug that is NOT green astro-turf is a quick way to define an area. If you have the space, 2 complimentary area rugs can be used. You could use one for the sitting area and another for an eating area. Another trick is to use on a diagonal. Often times our outdoor spaces are boxy or rectangular. By using diagonals it will help to break the hard over-all lines of its structure. Walls can be transformed with art once you have placed your furniture. Your ceiling is also important!

The Victorians used to paint their porch ceilings to resemble a blue sky. I especially recommend following their lead if your homes style is conducive to that type of look. Try to create a pleasing & relaxing color that compliments your space. It is a large surface without many obstructions and is often overlooked.

Next, determine how you plan to “live” in the space. What are the special needs. Often people want a place to lay books & magazines. They need a place to put their drinks. Some like to have games & cards. You can now plan your furniture around your needs. Make sure you address the needs of a space first. The best decorating will not be fully enjoyed if the space doesn’t function well. Whenever possible it is best if you have easy access to electricity.

One of the best tricks is to use a table lamp on a side table. (Be extra careful by making sure not to expose anyone to electric shock especially in the rain. Most electric outlets found outdoors are GFI protected against inclement weather.) There is a subliminal effect when you see a lamp & shade. Your brain is wired to see a lamp and shade indoors; therefore it has an immediate effect on blurring the line of indoor/outdoor. A lamp will also affect the mood of the space. Make sure that the light is soft and not obtrusive to someone when they are sitting. Play close attention to scale.

Another lighting secret to blurring the line is to use a candle-lier. They quickly set a summer romantic feeling. (Cont. on pg.2) Place your furniture and then address your walls. Hang a beautiful painting or mirror. Remember to look at what the mirror reflects when you are sitting in the space. If you have hanging baskets or nice landscaping this is a way to double the beauty with reflection. When choosing art “think BIG”! One great print of the seashore will add drama especially if the frame is also big. Once again, blurring the line. We are not used to seeing large pieces of framed art outdoors.

Anchor securely to walls and even consider setting down if you know inclement weather is coming. You can use that as inspiration for colors. Think of a way to incorporate summer colors. Perhaps your cushion for a wicker settee is a little tired, consider wrapping it in a nice crisp cotton flat sheet. Wrap neatly and place open seem on bottom. The cotton feels nice and cool on a hot summer day. Use nice pillows in different shapes. Another nice touch is to use large earthen ware flower pots converted into side tables or 2 together as coffee table. I like to use large round mirrors to top them with. Great prints also work, so will trays. Perhaps you have a great old picnic basket that you could use as accessory to hold games, books or magazines. Always add silk or real greenery.

O.K. now that you have torn apart your porch and re-designed the space, kick off your shoes and enjoy! The worst choice in decorating is to let fear stop you from exploring and embracing something new. BE BRAVE AND ENJOY YOUR SURROUNDINGS!
