Avon Lake Celebrates Americans With Disabilities Act
Annual picnic celebrates passage of landmark legislation
It's been 21 years since the passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), and Avon Lake continues its celebration of that historic bill.
Signed into law by President George H.W. Bush, the ADA (42 U.S.C. §12101 et seq.) literally opened doors to people with disabilities. It mandated that architects and designers design buildings with the handicapped in mind. It required employers to make reasonable accommodations for people with handicaps who are otherwise qualified to do the job.
The city has been hosting a picnic in honor of this law since then. This year's event was held at the on Walker Road. Dinner consisted of pizza, hamburgers and hot dogs. A DJ played tunes and Cupcake the Clown provided entertainment, and Slider made a surprise visit.
