East Coast Rattled By 5.9 Earthquake

A was reported in northern Virginia Tuesday afternoon shaking up a good portion of the eastern coast. Mineral, VA was cited as the quake’s epicenter.

At posting, all national monuments in the D.C. area were stable, although several buildings, including the Pentagon and White House were temporarily evacuated after the earthquake.

People in northeast Ohio are reporting feeling the quake. Fairlawn-Bath Patch reported that firefighters at a station in Bath Township noticed swaying blinds and computer screens.

On the Avon Lake Patch's Facebook page, friends are adding comments. Aimee Miller said she was at her desk at work in Oberlin and felt the office swaying back and forth. Cheryl Higley felt the quake at the Philadelphia airport while waiting for a flight home. Erika McCracken said she felt the earthquake sitting at her desk in Avon Lake while some residents working in Independence “felt nothing.” Scott Rush of said he was 'busy making great lunches" at the time.

The Plain Dealer reported that people in the press box at Progressive Field for Tuesday afternoon's Cleveland Indians game reported feeling swaying and people in downtown Cleveland near the filming of the "Avengers" movie reported feeling tremors.
