Great Escape: 2011 Cleveland Auto Show

Lots of things that make you go "vrooom!"

Looking for the ultimate fantasy getaway (within 30 miles)? Check out the 2011 Cleveland Auto Show at the IX Center that runs through March 6.

So much more than just a showcase of the hottest new cars out there, the auto show is an ideal place for friends, families and even a date.

Seven manufacturers offer “ride n drives,” but if you’re looking for a little excitement don’t miss the JEEP Rocks & Road Tour. Strap in and let a pro take you through a rock and rolling obstacle course that takes you over some seriously rough terrain, puts the vehicle at a 40 degree side angle and takes you up a 40-degree incline that turns into, you guessed it, a 40-degree decline.

Need some time away from the kids? While the Auto Show is an idea place to take the family (there are bounce houses, balloon animals and face painting, last week’s Saturday afternoon crowd was filled with couples looking to do something a little different.

That might include salivating over concept cards, to window shopping for your favorite hybrid “green car” that makes it 40 miles on the gallon to the oh-so-impractical Spyker C8 Laviolette, everyone's dream car that will set you back $225,000 and get you 13 mpg. In addition to the free giveaways, car show attendees are treated to entertainment, from the Cavs girls and coach to players. Meet Moondog & Sir CC on March 3 from 6 – 7 p.m. and JJ Hickson on March 5 from 4 – 5 p.m. Cleveland Browns players Peyton Hillis and Brian Robiskie will be on hand on March 3 and on March 4, meet Ohio State football players.

The show features plenty of libations, including cold beer for those 21 and over, pizza, ice cream, snacks and bakery items.

Feeling nostalgic? Check out the IX Center’s South Hall for a classic car show. Tickets are available for $10 (seniors and preteen) and $12 (13 to senior) at the show or online. Parking is free.
