Lessons in Love for Valentine's Day

Married couples share their experiences

At Sunday's at , some couples shared their experiences with romance, love and marriage.

So if you're looking for wisdom, here are some tips. If you have your own to share, post them in the comments. And share photos of you and your Valentine in our Neighborhood Gallery!

  • Show the other person they're valued. When Christopher Longstreet went to pick up his now-wife Amy for their first date, he came to the door to pick her up and treated the night like it was something special, even though they had known each other for years.
  • Do good things for each other. The Longstreets were in their early twenties when they got married, and money was tight as wedding plans were being made. Amy resigned herself to having to forego a honeymoon trip. Little did she know that Christopher had saved up for and secretly planned a honeymoon to Virgina Beach all on his own. She got the happy surprise on their wedding day.
  • Being there matters. Sarah Rybarczyk said what she loves most about Mark, her husband of 25 years, is his stability as a husband and father. "He's been the rock in the relationship," she said. His gentle, but firm, ways helped them get through the crazy years of early parenthood.
  • You have to be committed. Christopher Longstreet said knowing you're going to stick with it even when times are hard can give a marriage strength and security. "Times aren't always going to be easy," Sarah Rybarczyk said. "You have to be committed to your life together."
  • Remember what you love about each other. Kevin Melcher's eyes light up when he remembers seeing his wife, Brenda, for the first time in 1983. "Leggy, blonde, beautiful eyes," he said. While the attraction was mutual, it wasn't all that got them to the altar in 1986. Shared values and liking each other as well as loving each other did that. "He was just a good guy," Brenda said.
