Trash Workers On Strike, No Pickup in Avon, Avon Lake

Bring your trash back in and check back for updates.

UPDATED 2:16 p.m- Trash will be picked up Tuesday, April 2. The regular trash schedule will resume next Monday.

It's not a joke: If you put out trash in Avon and Avon Lake expecting a Monday pickup, take it off your treelawn.

Avon and Avon Lake Republic Waste customers won't have their trash picked up Monday, April 1 because of a strike.  Republic Area Marketing Manager Dave Kidder said workers went out on strike as on midnight Monday, April 1 that affects all of Lorain County.

Republic Waste workers, who belong to the Teamsters, are picketing at the Elyria trucking company.

According to the Teamsters website, "Sanitation workers employed by Republic Services/Allied Waste went on strike in Ohio last night to protest the company’s violations of federal labor law." The striking workers are members of Teamsters Local Union 377 of Youngstown, however Republic workers in other areas, including Evansville and Urbana, IL, are striking in a show of solidarity.

Residents are advised to move their trash back into their garage or house until further information is available.

“We have no idea when it’s going to be picked up,” Elizabeth Gedeon, Mayor Greg Zilka’s secretary said. “It may be tomorrow but we don’t know.”

Kidder said the company was not aware there would be no trash pickup before last night.

“We did not anticipate them to go out on strike at midnight,” Kidder said.

Asked when trash pickup could resume, Kidder said, “I wish I could tell you that. I don’t know.”

Gedeon said the city is asking that residents bring their trash back in so it does not blow away.

Check back for updates.

If trash is not picked up this week will the residents be compensated??
Lori E. Switaj April 01, 2013 at 04:20 PM
Great question for the company to answer Karen. Let's hope this gets settled quick, and we'll be checking for updates. At present, Republic is saying trash will be moved back one day this week... so far. The PR people have my number if the strike ends today...I'll ask them when they call back.

Is this April fools???
Lori E. Switaj April 01, 2013 at 04:51 PM
This is NOT an April Fool's joke. I'm guessing at this point everyone's trash is still outside...

Thats why city services should be left to city workers! Their unions have binding arbitration--no strikes---only SERVICE!
Kristen LePrevost April 01, 2013 at 05:14 PM
This is nuts...they better get this resolved asap and not like the mess in Strongsville

Please note that this strike is affecting more than just Avon and Avon Lake, but also Amherst, LaGrange, Lorain, North Ridgeville and Vermillion, and that is just today. http://www.morningjournal.com/articles/2013/04/01/news/doc51599ac5261eb279785806.txt

Yes Diane, as noted in the article it is affecting all of Lorain County and parts of Illinois as well. That's a lot of trash.

This is why unions are on the way out. Bring in other companies to bid on the contract.
Jarvis April 01, 2013 at 06:33 PM
Just received a recorded message from city that trash pick up will resume tomorrow.

Thanks Jarvis, just posted a follow-up story about 5 minutes ago.

Unions are not on the way out at all...give me a union worker any day over a under trained and very under paid worker who doesn't care..unions are still 100% relevant to this day..let me ask you this, what other organization will fight for equal pay for you while some huge corporation will do everything in its power to cut your pay as much as possible to satisfy the board for its bottom line?

Good for the drivers the trash company runs one truck and driver also has to pick up cans and jump back in and drive to the next house. At one time there was two men for a truck. Stay out until the company gives back the second driver. 100% behind the Teamsters

ok, no pick up this entire week. The are just considering this a "strike day?" not picking up on Tues, just skipping us, correct? OK, on to the better topic, is Avon Lake not considering a new contract for trash pick up now? Seems to me i renmember them saying that the contract will soon be up, and they are considering different companies? Knowing our luck, they just have signed a long term contract with republic...

Does anyone know the violations of the Federal Labor Law that took place? I support the union if the laws were broken. I support the company if these violations are frivolous. Regardless, proper trash service is a must.
