Avon-On-The-Lake Garden Club Earns Four National Awards

The Avon-On-The-Lake Garden Club has been honored with four awards from the National Garden Clubs Inc.  (NGC) just months after earning another prestigious award.

The NGC awarded an Overall Winner prize of $1,000 for the club’s entry in “Civic Project with Native Plants.” This ongoing Wildflower Garden project, co-chaired by Armgard Hartitz and Diane Ruma, includes the design and planting of native and wildflower plants at Miller Road Park, next to the Peter Miller House Museum on Lake Road.

The club will also receive a silver tray for being named the Overall Winner of the NGC’s “World Gardening” category for its entry, “The Seeds of Hope Project.” Begun in 2008, the project has been chaired by Jo’C Walker and is financed by plant sales. More than 2,100 seed packs have already been sent to Uganda to help those residents grow their own food.

A standard Flower Achievement Award Certificate and a red, white and blue rosetta was also received for its 2012 Patriotic Flower Show in July, “Shades of Old Glory.”

A Certificate of Commendation for First Place in the Historic Preservation Category was also received for the maintenance of the Fence Garden at Peter Miller House Museum.

Club President, Audrey Roberts, was excited about the announcement, recognizing the efforts of the many other club members who made the awards possible.

“It has been a very special year of recognition for the Avon-On-The-Lake Garden Club,” Roberts said. “In April, the club was named Ohio Garden Club of the Year by the Garden Clubs of Ohio Inc. That award also earned us a city proclamation.”

The news also comes on the heels of the club successfully raising enough money to present the city of Avon Lake with a Blue Star Memorial honoring all past, present, and future members of the military. This distinctive memorial will be placed at Veterans Memorial Park in Avon Lake in special ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 22.
