City Ready for Falling Leaves

Some tips for putting leaves at curb for pick-up

Whether you use a leaf-blower or a rake, the city of Avon can help make your fallen leaves disappear.

The is providing curbside pick-up of leaves this fall. The collection will run as long as the leaves are falling, if the weather permits.

There is no set schedule for leaf removal. The Streets Department estimates that, depending on how many leaves there are to collect, it takes between one and two weeks to do a collection around the entire city.

All you have to do is get your leaves to the curb. Don't bag them or put them in Allied Waste containers.

City engineer Robert Knopf reminds residents that, when they rake their leaves to the curb, to not block storm drains. That can lead to street flooding.

Other tips for leaf removal:

  • Rake leaves to the treelawn or just before the curb.
  • Don't rake leaves into the street.
  • Keep piles of leaves away from water meter covers.
  • Don't park a car on piled leaves. The heat from the car engine can ignite the leaves.
  • Remove sticks, twigs, stones and other debris from leaf piles. They can damage city equipment and could get a worker hurt.
