Being Challenged Brings Meaning to Work

This is the last post of our five part series about finding meaning at work.

No one likes to be bored at work.

Boredom leads to complacency, stifles creativity and innovation and can be felt a mile away. Leaders must keep those they lead engaged, challenged, growing and learning.

Going to a workplace where you know you’re going to learn something is meaningful. Going to work knowing you have problems to solve and things to do is meaningful, provides purpose and builds confidence.

If you find yourself in a position where you’re not being challenged, take on the responsibility yourself. Find new ways to do old things, challenge yourself to learn something new every day, be relentless about spicing up your work, talk to your colleagues about ideas you want to try, name three small problems you want to solve every day and solve them. Small changes can make a big difference.

Finding meaning at work is a huge topic to explore, as no one person defines meaning in the same way. But we can all do our part to create the right conditions for those we lead to connect to their own sense of meaning while taking the time to truly consider what meaning is for ourselves and modeling the quest to find it, daily.
