Growing Concerns About the Market

In a world full of volatility, clients are struggling to find control of their investments.

 In today's complex world, growing concerns about market fundamentals and the potential impact on investment performance weigh heavily on investors' minds. For example, in our BlackRock Barometer Survey, 91% of investors say that market conditions are among the biggest risks they face now, up from 79% in Q3 2011.

When asked about the most important factor to build confidence in investing, 38% of investors point to "sustained market stability." In a world full of volatility, clients are struggling to find control of their investments.

However, there are investment strategies to keep in mind that can help portfolios prosper in the long term. Now is a prime time to talk to your clients about the dangers of poor investment timing and the opportunities of a dollar-cost averaging strategy. For example, share this hypothetical situation regarding how the best performing days can occur in the midst of a downturn and why a proper strategy is important:

  • If a client had invested $100,000 in the S&P 500 Index 20 years ago, the investment would have grown to $450,022.
  • If the investor had missed just the top five performance days over that 20-year period, the $100,000 investment would have grown to only $298,539. This ending value is $150,000 less than staying invested the entire time.
