Maximizing Spousal Social Security Benefits

You may be entitled to receive spousal benefits in addition to your own benefits.

<50%: Benefits relative to spouse's PIA to qualify for additional Social Security payments

Are you a secondary earner? If so, and your Social Security benefits are less
than 50%
of the primary earner’s insurance amount, you may be entitled to
receive spousal benefits in addition to your own benefits. However, if you
commence benefits prior to your full retirement age (FRA), all benefits, both
individual and spousal, will be reduced. This may have a significant impact on
both your spouse’s and your lifetime benefits, especially if you and your
spouse have long retirements.
