Consumer Confidence Higher in August

81.5: Consumer confidence level in August 2013

Americans are apparently becoming more optimistic about the economy, as evidenced by a recent increase in US consumer confidence. The Conference Board reported that its index of consumer confidence rose to 81.5 this month from a revised 81.0 in July. In June, the index hit 82.1, its highest reading since January 2008.

The latest reading comes as a pleasant surprise to many economists who had predicted a lower number. Much of the increase can be attributed to consumers' outlook for economic activity over the next six months.
