Dick Ambrose to Speak at Avon Lake Kiwanis Club Thursday

Ambrose, a former Cleveland Brown, presided over the Anthony Sowell trial.

Cuyahoga County Court judge and former Cleveland Brown Dick Ambrose will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, June 13 Avon Lake Kiwanis Club at the Avon Lake Public Library.

Ambrose, a Westlake resident, played nine seasons in the National Football League with the Cleveland Browns, from 1975 to 1983. 

He has been a judge of the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas since 2004 and was the presiding judge in the trial of Anthony Sowell, the Cleveland serial killer who was eventually found guilty on 82 charges and sentenced Sowell to death by Ambrose in 2011.

Ambrose said he will be plans to speak about what he’s learned about society and people from his time as a judge “in addition to my experiences as a player for the Cleveland Browns,” he said by email.

Those interested in hearing Ambrose speak can attend the speaker’s portion starting at approximately 7:15 p.m. (in the Gallery Room).

The Avon Lake Kiwanis Club membership is open to those in Avon Lake and surrounding communities. The organization, which is part of the International Kiwanis Club, is “dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time."

The organization meets every Thursday for a 6:30 p.m. dinner (not required) and 7 p.m. meeting at the Avon Lake Public Library. Those interested in attending can contact Eileen Wozniak at wozniakeileen@yahoo.com.
