Running Trail, ‘Images of Avon Lake’ are Projects of the Year

The Avon Lake Community Council opted for two “Project of the Year” recipients this year. The honor is bestowed on a person or group that has completed a significant project for the 2011 year.

This year’s winners are student Connor Musial for the at the high school and Avon Lake Assistant Director Gerry Vogel for his work on producing his book, Images of America: Avon Lake. 

“The Committee felt that both projects, although diverse, were representative of individual efforts that make Avon Lake a better place to live,” Martin O’Donnell, president of the Community Council said.

Connor Musial completed his Eagle Scout service project by coordinating volunteers and resources to finish the walking/running trail at the High School. The project involved more than 250 hours of work by Boy Scout Troop 334, parents and members of the Avon Lake Cross Country Team which involved construction and obtaining of funding and donations. 

“The project has given the community a safe place to run or walk,” O’Donnell said.           

“I knew the high school track coach wanted to put a new track in back of the high school property for a long time,” Musial said soon after the trail was completed in September of 2011. “I thought that building a track would be a great connection between the school, the track team, the scouts and the volunteers from the community."

Gerry Vogel’s book , took more than three years to produce which involved obtaining photographs and information, performing historical research, and going through the publication process.

“His work in preserving the heritage of the community for future generations is outstanding. His work is invaluable,” O’Donnell said.

The book, which was released in August of 2011 is filled with historical images of the city.

“We collected more than 1,000 photos, as well as postcards and other memorabilia,” Vogel said in August of 2011. The collection, which began in 2008, was narrowed down to 200 pictures for the book, which is available for sale at the Avon Lake Public Library.
