Table for One: Call Me A Cheap Date

It's as scandalous as it can be in the suburbs.

We all have them. For some women, it’s shoes. Purses. Jewelry. Scrapping. I’m talking vices.

Me? It’s dining out. Hands down, I’d rather have someone else create a culinary masterpiece than me slave away in the kitchen. Who am I kidding? I’m also okay with a sandwich of some sort as long as I’m not the one making it.

So when a new spot opens, I’m typically one of the first in line. And was I disappointed when Two Bucks opened a few years ago. The food was lackluster. The service was terribly slow. And the marketing concept of “two bucks” seemed so lost on its menu, it irritated my brain.

But months later I tried it again because frankly, I don’t like fast food, and Two Bucks is local and cheap. And I was pleasantly surprised. So surprised that is now one of my favorite local hangouts.

On any given afternoon, I know I can find scores of Little League teams in the restaurant so I’m comfortable knowing I can bring my daughter there.

But more importantly, I can confidently walk in alone and the bartenders will serve a short glass of vodka and Seven for a mere $2.00. And how about $2.00 sliders (I love the sesame chicken burger with Asian slaw)? $2.00 gouda mac and cheese? $2.00 sage and garlic fries? $2.00 beer on tap? Perfect for a soon-to-be single Mom on a budget. And great if you’re looking for an excuse to hang with friends near home and don’t want to spend the cash.

Plus, I have to patronize a place that really engages customers with social media. [Full disclosure: I am a community manager IRL (Google it if you don’t know what the abbreviation means.)] Two Bucks is active on Facebook and Twitter, making it simple to keep up with the latest specials. And you never know if you’ll catch a glimpse of yourself on its page. I don’t mind getting caught on camera sitting alone at this bar. I’m always smiling when I’m sitting with the folks at Two Bucks.

You don’t have to spend the money to impress me. Just give me good food, great people, and this Mom will be alright. And remember, sage and garlic fries never hurts.

As always, if you see a Mom sitting alone in a restaurant, it’s likely me. Come say hello.
