Former Mayor of Avon, Donald Hubbard, Passes Away

He was one of the last part-time mayors in Avon.

Donald L. Hubbard, 84, a lifelong resident of Avon, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012. He was born on March 26, 1928 in Lorain and was a graduate of .

Hubbard served as the mayor of Avon from 1972-1979 and was active in Avon from 1968-1994, serving on council, including a stint as council president. He was also a member of thee Avon Lions Club.  

Current Avon Mayor Jim Smith remembered Hubbard, and his family fondly.

“The Hubbards are a longstanding family in the community,” Smith said.

Don Hubbard was one of the last of Avon’s part-time mayors. Smith, who succeeded Hubbard, was part-time until the position became full-time.

“(The city) didn’t have a lot of money back then, and as the manager of the city he did an nice job,” Smith said. “He was level headed, and was thoughtful before making a decision. He was intelligent and has a very good though process.

“He was an asset to the city.”

Hubbard also worked as an engineering assistant for B.F. Goodrich in Avon Lake where he retired after 40 years.

“It was difficult,” Smith said of holding a full-time job during the day and tending to city business at night.

Smith said as mayor, Hubbard didn’t “shoot from the hip,” and tended to be a calming force when situations were potentially volatile.

“He didn’t take sides,” Smith said.

Hubbard is survived by his children Terry Wood (Kenneth), Sandy Collins (Dennis), and Bruce (Carolyn); seven grandchildren; sister Sis Wernert; and sister-in-law Theresa Hubbard.

Visitation is Sunday, Aug. 19 from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. at in Avon. Funeral service is Monday, Aug.  20 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home followed by interment at Interment at Resthaven Memory Gardens.
