Norman Shanks, "Mr. Rivet," Marathon Rivets Founder

Services to be held Saturday, July 13

Avon Lake businessman and Army veteran Norman Shanks died at age 83 July 6, Busch Funeral & Crematory Services reports.

Shanks, dubbed "Mr. Rivet" by colleagues, founded Marathon Fasteners, North Coast Rivet Company and North Coast Marathon Associates for Engineering and Development of Special Parts.

He graduated from Lorain High School in 1948 and served in the Army during the Korean War. A member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and American Legion Post 0888, Shanks liked sports and music, especially jazz, R&B and Dixieland.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Irene, (nee Rago and Kapronica); son, Thomas (Sally) of North Royalton; daughters, Nancy (John) Ference of Brecksville and Kathryn (Alan) Rodriguez of Canton; step children, Frank Kapronica, Polly Kapronica of Elyria and Jean (Larry) Rodak of Westlake; eleven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Jacqueline.

Services will be held at Busch Funeral Home Saturday, July 13. Friends may call there after the service until 5 p.m.
