Avon Fire Department Shows its Eagle Pride

Avon Eagle part of logo on new squad vehicle

The new squad vehicle has a touch of Avon Eagle pride.

Department captain Michael Emling helped design a new logo for the new vehicle, which arrived at the department on Tuesday. The new logo features the eagle in the center with a backdrop of flames.

Emling said he worked with a graphic artist to come up with the design, which originally was just the eagle in the middle of the fire department's logo. The flames backdrop was added, along with a reflective border to help the logo stand out even more.

The logo worked, Root said, because most of the department lives in Avon. The entire officer corps -- including Root -- are Avon Hgh graduates.

"We're invested in the community and we want to show our pride," Root said.

Root said the new squad vehicle, which can be used to treat victims at the scene or transport them to the hospital, cost $206,000 total. It is paid for by the which will be up for renewal this year.

Instead of one solid piece, the vehicle is comprised of the chassis up front where it is driven and the box, where the patients go when being transported. The chassis is by Ford, an F-650, which will soon be built at .

"We're glad we can support something that's going to be made right next door," Root said.

The box was made by Braun. When the chassis wears out, Root said, the existing box will just be put on a new chassis, saving the city money because it won't have to replace the box as well. This chassis cost $59,594 on its own, Emling said.
