Avon Lake Police Post Outstanding Warrants on Facebook

Department using social media to bring in fugitives. Facebook warrant page lists almost 100 people.

There's a lot of outstanding people on Facebook. And now, there's a lot of people with outstanding arrest warrants.

Having your face show up on this page isn’t something you’d “like” anytime soon, but the 96 names and faces currently on the s page of outstanding warrants is something the police department is hoping will draw attention.

“We had done the Facebook page awhile ago,” Avon Lake Lt. Duane Streator said. “But we hadn’t done a lot with it. Once we got everything together, Rachel Burson, our administrative assistant helped out in getting it up.”

The warrant page went live April 6.

Streator is banking on social media to have as many people look at the page as possible and to have addresses or locations of the individuals called in or posted on the site.

“We found an avenue to use Facebook as a vehicle to help out,” Streator said. “We’re putting technology to use on Facebook.”

The page features a grid of faces four across and at deadline, 28 down. Clicking on the mugshot will provide the person’s name and reason the warrant was issued, such as failure to comply or receiving stolen goods. The warrants are issued through the .

Streator said some of the warrants may be older and not everyone may still be living in the area.

Streator found out just how fast the Internet moves. Within minutes of the warrant page going live at approximately 3 p.m., they had a comment posted. Within 20 minutes, Avon Lake Patch called to inquire about it.

“We were getting ready to put out a press release on it,” Streator said.

Streator said they will be getting more active with their Facebook account, which 65 people currently “like.”

“We’ll use se it not only for warrants, but if there was something we could post in a quick manner, such as road closings,” Streator said. “And then the good stuff also, like stuff from last year’s open house.”
