Avon Man Shot In Head, Killed by Roommate

Alcohol may have been a factor.

A 29-year-old man was shot to death in Avon early Saturday morning, Avon Police confirmed. 

Police said they received a 9-1-1 call from a female on Oct. 12. When they arrived they found a man in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to his head and his roommate, Ryan Raider, 25, standing over him trying to stop the bleeding.

Smith was taken to EMH Avon Emergency Care Center before being flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where he was pronounced dead.

Raider was taken into custody and charged with reckless homicide and having weapons while intoxicated. He is currently being held at the Lorain County Jail and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Avon Lake Municipal Court.

The incident is still under investigation. Police believe the shooting was accidental but said they believe alcohol was a factor.

Police said the shooting occurred at a private residence, but are not releasing the address. 

The Chronicle Telegram has released the victim's name, however Avon Police would not confirm his identity at this time.

Avon Police received assistance from Avon Lake and Sheffield Village police.
