Avon Police Officer Hurt After Cruiser Hit on I-90

Officer Barvincak suffered minor injuries in crash

An Avon police officer escaped serious injury when her cruiser was hit by a car during a traffic stop on Interstate 90 on Tuesday.

The incident happened around 10:26 a.m. on I-90 west at mile marker 151.6, just before the Route 611 exit. Avon police officer Janet Barvincak was making a traffic stop with the emergency lights on when a 2000 Ford Escort driven by Colleen Connelly, 42, of Lakewood, swerved into the breakdown lane and hit the cruiser.

Both cars had to be towed from the crash scene. Connelly was treated at St. John Westshore. Ptl. Barvincak was treated at Avon Emergency Care Center.

Connelly was cited for reasonable control.

A man was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated after he lost control of his car at a curve near Detroit and Long Roads.

An Avon Streets Department worker witnessed the crash and called Avon police. Shawn Weppelmen, 28, was charged with OVI.

A teenager was spotted doing donuts with their Jeep in the parking lot of Tom's Country Place around 3:45 a.m. on March 6. The teen was brought into the station and turned over to their mom. No word if daddy took the T-Bird ... we mean, Jeep ... away.

Fast Mover

A woman at Wal-Mart had her debit card stolen right out of her hand just before noon on March 8.

The woman had just checked out and was looking at her receipt when a black male shoved her, grabbed her debt card out of her hand, and took off. She immediately got in touch with her bank and cancelled her card.

Tragedy Averted

A man who tried to jump in front of a car being driven by his child's mother in a suicide attempt around 5:45 p.m. on March 8 was found in the woods by Avon police and hospitalized for evaluation.

Nice Try

A woman was charged with theft after Wal-Mart complained she was trying to commit fraud returning items to the store. Cheryl Taylor, 27, was charged.
