Community Police Academy Begins Sept. 11

Avon Lake Police Chief David Owad and the are again hosting a Community Police Academy that will begin on Sept. 11.

The Community Police Academy is a 10 week program designed to give the public a working knowledge of the Avon Lake Police Department. 

“This is just another way we can connect with the community,” Police Lt. Duane Streator said.

The program will be held for 10 consecutive Tuesday nights from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. starting Sept. 11.

Each session will cover separate areas of the department’s operations including firearms, communications, patrol and computer forensics.

Instruction will consist of lectures, demonstrations and student participation.

“The main goal of the Community Police Academy is to provide information to the public that will increase the rapport between the citizens and the officers of the Avon Lake Police Department,” a press release said. “We also anticipate that the participants will become better aware and informed on how the Avon Lake Police Department operates.

“We hope that the graduates of the Academy will utilize the knowledge gained through the program to assist the Police Department in its goals of providing a safe community for the citizens of Avon Lake.”

The academy is open to anyone 21 years of age and above at no cost. The participants will be required to complete an application form and are subject to a background investigation. The classes will be filled on a first come basis. All of the participants are expected to attend all sessions of the program.
