Fire Department Helps English Firefighters Out

Pair are traveling US on charity trip

Avon's found itself playing host unexpectedly Friday, but carried it out with aplomb.

Having a big fire truck with a 100-foot ladder helps.

Fire chief Frank Root found out Friday morning that a pair of firefighters from the County of Gloucestershire, England, were in Sandusky as part of a cross-country trip raising money for charity. And they needed a lift, hoping to get to Pittsburgh by bedtime Friday.

Root drove out to Sandusky to pick up Adrian Davis and Jane Putland and brought them to the firehouse in Avon. They toured the firehouse, compared notes on how things are done similarly and differently here as opposed to in England, and took a ride on the 100-foot ladder for a birds-eye view of the city.

Later that day, Putland and Davis were going to get rides to Pittsburgh, and expect to be in New York, their final destination, by Wednesday.

The trip is raising money for multiple sclerosis, cancer and injured/fallen firefighter charities in England.
