First Responders Softball Game Raises More than $3,000

Money goes to helping breast cancer patients

July's between first responders in Avon and Avon Lake raised more than $3,000 to help the fight against breast cancer, organizer John Gansor said Sunday.

The event at  led to $3,060 being donated to the Fairview Hospital Breast Health Center.

Gansor, an Avon firefighter, began the benefit softball game after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, it grew from a game between Avon's and departments to one between neighboring communities' first responders.

Gansor said Avon Lake's and departments are already interested in a rematch. Avon won the game, 20-8.

"It's definitely going to happen," said Gansor. "We'll be glad to give them another beating."
