Streator said police believe he walked from the Safety Center, which houses both the police and court to the two driveways down, where he attempted to steal a car from a woman.

“We believe that’s what happened,” Streator said. “The timing would be correct.”

At 11:52 a.m. on Dec. 8, the Avon Lake Police Department received a call of a possible carjacking at the .

“The caller reported that a male had approached a woman after she has finished pumping gas and grabbed her from her vehicle and then got into her car in an attempt to take it,” a press release issued by the police department said.

The 48-year-old woman, who lives in Avon Lake, screamed and several patrons came to help her. The patron grabbed the male from the car and some construction workers who were working in the parking lot held the male on the ground until police arrived.

The woman told police that she has seen Schiffbauer walking back and forth while she was pumping gas. When she finished pumping gas and was getting into her vehicle, Schiffbauer reportedly approached her, held her car door open and pointed something at her from inside his coat making her believe he had a weapon. She then got out of the car, Schiffbauer got in the car and she yelled for help.

Streator said Avon Lake resident Ronald Cherni,76, and Brian Williams, 40, of Barberton came to her aid and pulled Schiffbauer from the vehicle and held him on the ground with the help of the construction workers until officers arrived.

No weapon was found on Schiffbauer and no one was hurt.
