Phone Scam Doesn't Work on Avon Man

The following arrest information was provided by the Avon Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

An Avon man was not the latest victim of  a phone scam, but he reported it to Avon police.

The man told on April 2 that he got a call from a Mr. Gates of something called Winners International. This Mr. Gates said the man was a winner of $2.5 million and a 2012 Mercedes-Benz. All the man had to do to claim his prize, he was told by Mr. Gates, was send $499 to Western Union in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Instead of calling Western Union, he called the cops.

That explains the smell, Mom

Some children were caught by an Avon police officer while climbing into a dumpster on Aspen Lane just after 7 p.m. on April 5.

The officer warned them about it and sent them on their way.

Sleeping it off

A man was cited for drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle after being spotted sleeping in his car in the parking lot of Ray’s Auto & Truck around 10:16 p.m. on April 3.

The car was left in the lot overnight while the man was taken home from the police station by his wife.

Well, I admire the Avon man for alerting the police. It should be how it is for anybody who gets a scam call. That way, the authorities get to alert the public as well.
I've read several scam attempts reported at http://www.callercenter.com and it's great that the victims get to include the scammer's phone number on their complaints. And I wonder, how long are these scammers gonna keep calling people, try to scam them and get away with it?
