Police and Firefighters Team Up for Benefit Softball Game

Avon, Avon Lake first responders to play at All Pro Freight Stadium to fight breast cancer

When John Gansor's wife, Marla, was diagnosed with breast cancer, he wanted to do something about it.

So he took to the softball field.

Gansor organized a softball game to raise money for breast cancer charities. At first, it was a game between Avon police and fire departments in a classic Finest vs. Bravest contest.

Tickets are still available at the Avon and Avon Lake police and fire departments. All seats are $5, and kids under 15 get in for free.

Money raised will go to the Fairview Hospital Breast Health Center and the Gathering Place.

As he reached out to other Avon first responders while planning the first game, he found others affected by the disease, whether it was a wife, sister, mom or other relative or friend.

The idea came to bring the game to All Pro Freight Stadium to draw bigger crowds and raise more money.

Pink will be the color of the night. Pink ribbons will be painted on the field, the balls and bases will be pink.

The game is designed to be family-friendly, Gansor said. Fans can keep balls hit into the stands, there will be a 50-50 raffle and a raffle of gift baskets, kids will be eligible for door prizes, the concessions will be open and fireworks follow the game. Fans will also be invited to run around on the field after the game.

Gansor hopes it's an evening of fun for those battling breast cancer.

"I've seen firsthand what they go through," he said. "I was naive to the facts of breast cancer before (Marla was diagnosed). It's a total life-changer. My hat's off to any woman dealing with this. If we can give them a night of fun by watching a bunch of middle-aged wannabe athletes, then I'm glad to do it."
