Police Investigating Jewelry Store Burglary

Smash-and-grab happened at Avalon Jewelers

In the first smash-and-grab style burglary of an Avon business in recent memory, are reporting about $10,000 in jewelry was stolen from Avalon Jewelers in City Centre last week.

Police chief Richard Bosley said Tuesday that the department's detective bureau is now examining security footage to get a clear description of the suspect, who broke into the store early Thursday morning.

Smash-and-grab is exactly as it sounds, Bosley explained. The thief broke into the store, smashed a display case, grabbed what he or she could, and got out fast.

While the alarm was called in from the alarm company at 1:41 a.m., detectives are also checking security footage to verify the exact time of the break-in and how long the suspect was in the store.

The list of items stolen that Avalon Jewelers turned over to detectives shows that the burglar focused mostly on watches, Bosley added.

"This is the first burglary of this type that I can remember in Avon," Bosley, who has been with the Avon Police Department for 12 years, said.

Bosley said the department is working with nearby police departments to see if this burglary is similar to any in neighboring communities.
