Richard Bosley Sworn In As Police Chief

Bosley has been acting chief since Paul Romond's retirement

In a simple swearing-in at the close of Monday's meeting of City Council at , Richard Bosley became the new Avon chief of police.

Bosley was appointed as chief by Mayor Jim Smith after last week's that certified the results of the civil service test administered to the four applicants for the job.

Police department employees, Frank Root and assistant fire chief Tim Golay, several other city employees, David Owad, Elyria police chief Duane Whitely and representatives from the Lorain County Sheriff's Office were on hand for the ceremony and helped lead the applause after the swearing-in.

The , as the exam results were challenged by Bosley and his attorney after it came out that the tests were graded with the essay portions bearing the applicant's initials, a violation of city service rules. In the re-grading of the test with new graders, Bosley was the top scorer.

Bosley was relieved to have that behind him.

"i'm extremely humbled by the support the whole department has shown," he said.

"I'm so proud of him," his wife, Brenda, said. "He has the whole package -- knowledge, skill, heart."

Bosley is now looking ahead. He hasn't unpacked in his new office yet, and he's planning on meeting with his staff to get input on priorities.

"I'd really like to do a bigger crime prevention program," he said. "That should be a bigger part of our department."
