Sergeant Honored After More Than 3 Decades of Service

Sgt. Randy Bennett served for 33 years.

Avon Lake police sergeant Randy Bennett, who retired last week, received a resolution of gratitude and appreciation from city leaders and the chief of police on Feb. 27.

City council presented Bennett, who officially retired Feb. 22 after more than three decades on the job, with a formal resolution. Police Chief Dave Owad followed that with a presentation of a badge.

“Randy Bennett has earned the admiration and regard with those he has come into contact and his fellow public servants,” the resolution said.

City leaders complimented Bennett.

“It’s difficult to compile his long and distinguished career in just a few paragraphs,” Councilman David Kos said.

Martin O’Donnell thanked Bennett for his dedication to the community and “keeping it safe.”

Bennett joined the on Feb. 12, 1979. In 1985 Bennett was named officer of the year and was promoted to sergeant in 1987 and over the years was a hostage negotiator with the Lorain County Task Force.

He has been active in community service over the years and served as a high school football coach for 26 years, seven of those with the varsity team

Bennett, in attendance with his wife Carol, was presented with a badge by Owad.

“Thirty three years ago when you started you were presented with a badge when you started here and I’d like to present you with this one,” Owad said, giving  Bennett a retired sergeant badge.
