20 Avon Lake Homes Affected After Water Main Break May 15

Parts of Ashwood Drive under water. One driveway, parts of street damaged.

Residents of Ashwood Drive found their street under water May 15, despite the dry weather after a water main break between Electric and Redwood boulevards.

Avon Lake Municipal Utilities representative said that at approximately 7 p.m. last night, power surges in Avon Lake caused pressure fluctuations at Avon Lake Municipal Utilities’ Water Filtration Plant. The stutter effect caused a break in the 50-year old water main on Ashwood Drive between Electric and Redwood, affecting approximately 20 homes.

Being so close to the filtration/pumping station, the water was coming out very quickly. The break was fixed in 3 and a half hours.

ALMU engineers did not speculate the quantity of water lost. A resident’s driveway and part of Ashwood Drive were damaged and will be repaired by ALMU.

The break is not unique to the city. Avon Lake experiences approximately 75 water line breaks each year, due mostly to the aging infrastructure below our streets. The pipes that carry water to Avon Lake homes can be up to 85 years old; older in other communities. (For example, some of the underground water lines in Cleveland were built in the 1800s.)

Avon Lake Municipal Utilities has a program to replace aging water lines. The Belmar line has been recently replaced. Sections of the Redwood Boulevard and Walker Road water lines will be replaced this year. In the next few years, ALMU intends to replace lines on Harvey, Yoder and Moorewood.

Water breaks can immediately be reported to  Avon Lake Municipal 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 440-933-6226.
