About 1,600 Avon Homes Lose Power

FirstEnergy reports circuit serving the homes shut down for about one hour Thursday afternoon

About 1,600 FirstEnergy customers lost electricity for an hour on what could turn out to be the hottest afternoon of the year.

FirstEnergy spokesman Mark Durbin said the outage was caused by shutting down a circuit at a substation to make sure it was cooling properly in Thursday's heat.

The power was out between 3:15 and 4:15 p.m., he said.

This was not a case of rolling blackouts, Durbin said. Some Avon residents posted on the Avon Patch Facebook page that they got a call saying there would be rolling blackouts.

Durbin said the call was sent out through the city's Code Red system, which he said was unable to target the specific affected area.

No rolling blackouts are planned for Avon as of 5 p.m. Thursday, Durbin said.
