Avon Lake's American Legion Post Burns 1,200 Flags

Flags in disrepair, mostly from Avon Lake, are burned in annual ceremony

More than 1,200 United States flags were burned during an annual ceremony at the American Legion Hall on Walker Road June 14. The ceremony, conducted every Flag Day, was attended by American Legion members, members of Avon Lake’s Boy Scout Troop 338, and Legion volunteers.

The event began with the traditional Retreat Ceremony including the sounding of the Bugle Call "Assembly" and "Retreat." This was followed by one volley of blank rifle fire and playing of  "To The Colors" as the flag in front of the hall was lowered.  That flag was presented to the Commander as representative of all the faded, worn or tattered flag that will be disposed by burning.

Flags that have been disposed of at the American Legion Hall this past year were then burned in a ceremony that took several hours.
