“I have known Paul for a long time and I think he didn’t want any parties or hoopla or anything — he just wanted to ‘ride off into the sunset’.”
Smith called Romond “an outstanding chief who will be missed,” and said the move was not at all unexpected.

“He’s 64, I’m 63, and there comes a point where you have to spend time on other things. It’s time and he’s done a great job,” the mayor said.
“We all get to the age where you want to have some time to yourself. It will happen to me too eventually,” he added with a laugh. “He’s done a great job and we will all have to move on. It’s all a part of every process, and it will be so for the city as it moves forward as well.”
Avon Police Capt. Richard Bosley is currently serving as the Interim Chief of Police for Avon, Smith said.
Candidates interested in Romond’s position have declared intent to apply and will be taking part in a public safety selection exam, he added.
The exam — which is being prepared by an “outside, independent third party” according Smith — is expected to be administered on August 18. No date for a decision on a new chief has been set.
