Avon Wants to Take Over I-90 Maintenance from State

Avon Mayor Jim Smith said he will be petitioning the state of Ohio to allow the city of Avon to take over the maintenance of landscaping along I-90. The current maintenance being conducted by the state is not up to what he considers acceptable levels.

“They’re not considered what I would call, up to snuff,” Smith said at a recent council meeting. “History shows they are not taking care of it as they should.”

Presenting an acceptable public appearance was important, especially with the new Cleveland Clinic building that is clearly visible from I-90.

“We have grass, that if you’re not 6 feet tall, you’re not going to see over it,” he said, adding it was important if the city wants to continue drawing quality businesses along the highway.

Maintenance would also include mowing and trimming trees.

“It’s not good sales,” Smith said, noting that there are still vacant parcels that business could locate to. He said trash, including papers, collected in the high grass off I-90.

The city would need permission, and Smith said he would like to see lights on a “Welcome to Avon” sign.

“Businesses come here and spend millions of dollars and we owe it to them,” the mayor said.

The city would need permission from the state to beautify and maintain the property.

He received solid support from other council members.

“I think it’s a great idea,” Councilman Dennis McBride said. “It’s mostly cigarette butts I see.”

Councilman Dan Urban agreed on having the city handles maintenance and improvements.

“Having our gateway be a shining example,” Urbin said. “I think that’s a great thing.”

On June 17, Smith announced the city earned a state grant of approximately $40,000 - $60,000 earmarked for the beautification project.

"It won’t pay for labor, but it will pay for materials," Smith said.
