Candidate Statement: Avon Local Schools have become the most effective in the State, an internal belief that was later verified with data that was released last year. The results were based on our strong academic performance index score (top 10%) and our very low expenditure per student (bottom 3%).
In August, we regained the “Excellent with Distinction” rating from the State and improved our index score. Credit is due to our talented, qualified professionals, our children that strive to excel and, certainly, also to the parents that support them. In October, the financial data for the 2010-11 school year will be released. I was part of making the difficult decisions to reduce spending while trying to maintain the academic core. Based on the projections, our results will continue to demonstrate our fiscal responsibility.
In 2008, I restarted the strategic planning committee to improve external input into the future of our school district. Since that time, I have had the privilege to work with several of our passionate staff and community members to focus on improving student achievement through curriculum, student and staff development, improving communications with parents and residents and improving our financial planning.
The committee’s most recent recommendation was a proposal to address the current overcrowding in grades K-8. Avon was the third-fastest growing district in the state between the years of 2007-10. I strongly encourage everyone to review the Q&A on the district website at www.avonlocalschools.org. Please support Issue 8 on November 8.
I have been told many times that the past few years have been among the most challenging for the district. However, we still have many other areas that need to be addressed:
- Improving the competitiveness of our graduates for secondary education and/or in the workplace.
- Continuing to exceed the increasing state academic standards.
- Managing the expected growth.
- Preparing for further reductions in state funding.
- Improving communication with our parents and residents
I look forward to continuing to work with our community and the Avon School team in making a difference in the lives of our city's children.
