Committee to Study Avon Lake Redistricting Will Meet July 9

Several options will be discussed at this public meeting

Avon Lake’s three at-large councilmen who represent citizens citywide, have been appointed to a newly created Ward Redistricting Ad Hoc Committee which meets this weekend.

The committee will hold a meeting, which is open to the public, on Saturday, July 9 at 11 a.m. in conference room.

Dan Bucci, Marty O’Donnell and Greg Zilka will serve on the committee to determine what steps should be taken next in redistricting the city’s wards, which are unbalanced, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.

At the June 20 council  meeting, two suggestions were made for redistricting the city’s four wards. The first proposed map, created by a master’s student interning with the city, was created with the intention of remaining independent of how a proposed plan will affect current council members after the next election.

That map would have placed current Ward 4 councilman David Kos into Ward 3 and to serve once the wards were redistricted in July 2012.

A second proposed map would have realigned the wards so that Kos, who lives on Redwood Boulevard, would remain in Ward 3 next July.

Questions were raised how the second option could affect residents who could then find themselves in the same situation that Kos is currently in.

Other redistricting plans may be discussed at the meeting.

Council’s conference room is on the second floor of City Hall.
