Congresswoman Betty Sutton Talking Jobs at GM Today

Sutton (OH-13), representing cities in Cuyahoga, Lorain and Summit Counties, will visit the General Motors plant in Parma this afternoon to discuss boosting job growth in Ohio's manufacturing sector.

According to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, 529,000 Ohioans – or nine percent of the working population – were unemployed at the end of July.

That’s only a one percent decrease from last year, and as fears of another recession abound, many politicians are hitting the pavement and taking the floor to address this ongoing issue.

Congresswoman Betty Sutton (OH-13) is one of those politicians, and will appear in Parma this afternoon at the General Motors plant to highlight the need of putting more Ohioans back to work, communications director Anthony DeAngelo said.

Sutton will tour the plant, confer with GM officials and workers, voice her support and look for ways to improve the manufacturing industry in Ohio to perpetuate job growth, he said.

“Our manufacturing sector is the backbone of America, and when it is strong, our nation is strong,” she said in a prepared statement. “I look forward to talking with and hearing from the working men and women of GM and continuing my fight to grow more good-paying jobs in Ohio.”

Besides writing Consumer Assistance under the Recycle and Save “Cash for Clunkers” Act, Sutton is a member of the House Manufacturing Caucus, and the vice chair of the Congressional Automotive Caucus.

Sutton’s speaking engagement will start at 12:30 p.m., but will not be open to the public.
