E-Waste Roundup a Success at City Hall

In collaboration with Keep America Beautiful and its Great American Cleanup effort, the held an e-Waste Roundup Saturday, enabling folks to properly recycle their obsolete computer hardware and digital junk that, if disposed of improperly, would hurt the environment. 

Avon recycling coordinator partnered with Steven Kutash of E-Scrap Solutions who provided a semi trailer and volunteers to haul away the mound of e-junk that was collected  at . 

E-Scrap, founded in 2007, is a full-service computer and electronics recycling company located in downtown Cleveland that follows local, state and federal guidelines in disposing of digital junk, Kutash said.

By keeping e-waste out of landfills, the company is attempting to stem a deepening problem.  Electronics in landfills pose a significant environmental threat with the amount of toxins and chemicals they release into the soil and, in worst-case scenarios, the drinking water, he said. 

He and Young, who have forged their partnership over two years of recycling efforts, said they were pleased with the day’s turnout.

“The landfills are already toxic, and people think, ‘Well, what’s one more computer?’ But everybody thinks that and then the problem compounds,” Young said. “But for those who want to make a difference, they bring it here. 

“We had about 75 people come out today, and now we have a half a semi full of obsolete computers and electronics. Suddenly, people realize that their small contributions are collectively making a big difference.” 

The Great American Cleanup initiative will , as Young has planned multiple beautification and litter control projects that will  take place all over the city.
