More than 30 residents attend a sewer committee meeting in Council Chambers recently and had the opportunity to ask questions about the basement flooding after the Feb. 28 storm.
That night, 2 inches of rain fell in five hours. As temperatures rose above freezing, melting snow aggravated the problem.

Avon Lake Municipal Utilities Chief Utilities Executive Todd Danielson said his department received about 70 basement backup calls after the storm. Of those, two-thirds were related to sump pumps and one-third to sanitary sewer backups directly related to storm water.
Representatives from city council, engineering, building department and Avon Lake Municipal Utilities staff participated in a presentation that described how the flooding occurred. City leaders discussed what ALMU and city officials are doing to minimize the chances of it reoccurring, and what residents can do to keep water out of their basements. At the March 28 council meeting, Councilman Larry Meiners said the residents who have experienced flooding are supposed to notify the city after the event. If you experience: Basement Flooding, call at 440-933-6226 during business hours or 440-933-3229 after hours. To report street flooding, call the at 440-930-4126 during business hours or 440-933-4567 after hours and the will contact the service department. If you have a clogged sewer lateral/sump pump failure, call your plumber.
