Schwartz Road Park to Be Expanded

City to buy 18 acres of land to add more soccer fields

approved a plan Monday night to buy 18 acres of land adjoining the park. The seller is Williams Way of Avon LLC.

The city will pay $470,000 for the land, said, but that the move will be a cost-saver.

"We have the infrastructure in place," he said. "We don't have to spend a quarter of a million dollars building restrooms or a concession stand. We don't have to build a parking lot. Everything is already there."

The money will be advanced out of the general fund, Smith said, but would be paid back with building fees over time.

Smith said that the land will be used to add more soccer fields, something the local sports programs need. About 2,000 children participate in youth soccer in Avon, he said, and this acquisition would allow the city to have almost all its soccer fields at Schwartz Road Park, while will be used for baseball, softball and football.

Earlier in the meeting, Smith stressed the importance of the city continuing to add park land to accomodate the growing population.

"We're a family-oriented community," he said. "This is something the community wants."
