“We were very pleased at how many people showed up for the first event,” Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka said of the several hundred attendees. In addition to standing room only in the Avon Lake library, where the next forum will again be, a downstairs room held people watching the forum via closed caption television.

“This forum won’t be as long in presentations, but will include more than 20 professional groups.”

Zilka gave a lion’s share of the credit to city’s Recreation Program Coordinator,

Lisa Goodwin, who initially brought the problem to the mayor’s attention.

Lisa Goodwin has done the hard worker behind this,” Zilka said.

The three scheduled speakers are Pharmacist Brenda Brent, Walgreens Pharmacy; Tom Stuber, President of Lorain County Alcohol & Drug Abuse Services; and Chris Colon of the DEA  Drug Task Force.

Zilka said discussions will include the pharmacological impact, urging those with prescribed medications to keep them locked up.

“One scam is for (addicts) to attend open houses and rifle through medicine cabinets,” Zilka said.
