The Huffington Post reports that the proposal includes four major sections, focusing on topics like law enforcement, mental health, school safety and the availability of dangerous weapons. Many of these measures would require congressional action and could cost up to $500 million.

The president also announced more than 20 executive orders that can go into effect immediately, as reported by the New York Times reports. It is a symbolic, politically motivated move which will do absolutely noting to curb the real problem, which is the lenient sentencing criminal receive for committing acts of violence. In Chicago, a citizen cannot even own a handgun, but there more more people killed by handguns last year than all the coalition forces fighting in a war. Simple solution: Possession of an illegal gun = 10 years in prison. Use of a gun while committing a crime = 20 years in prison. Shoot someone with a gun while committing a crime = 30 years in prison. Intentionally kill someone with a gun = life in prison. No early release, no payroll, no probation......No exceptions. The judicial system is more concerned with protecting criminal rights, that they will infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens. These same liberals who are screaming about the need for gun control, are the ones who protect criminal rights. Get the politics out of it. Punish the criminals, get them off the street. This is proposal I think we can all agree on!
