Wanted: Council Seeks New Member

The introduction of a new mayor in Avon Lake means that effective Jan. 1, city council will have one vacated council seat.

The c as Avon Lake’s next mayor means Zilka’s council-at-large seat will be vacated immediately after his swearing in.

Now, is soliciting letters of interest and resumes from qualified residents interested in appointment to the position of council at-large for a period to expire Dec. 31, 2013. The new appointee will join the four ward and two at-large council members.

Several individuals have already submitted letters of interest. The next council representative will be appointed by current council members.

To qualify for this position, the applicant must be a resident and qualified elector of the municipality prior to the appointment and remain a resident during his/her term of office. The candidate shall hold no other public office or employment within the municipality and shall not be interested in profits of any job, work, or service for which moneys of the municipality are expended.

Unlike ward representatives, at-large representatives represent the entire city of Avon Lake. Council representatives are paid $9,500 a year and meet on Mondays for council meetings at 7:30 p.m. as well as committee meetings held throughout the month. Council members create and vote on city legislation.
