When Will Trash Be Picked Up? No One Really Knows

Second day of strike locally is probable.

Exactly when trash in Avon Lake will be picked up remains unknown. The city of Avon sent out a cell message earlier there would not be a pick up on Tuesday.

Republic Services/Allied Waste workers, for the second time this month, are striking "sympathetically" with Youngstown trash collectors on strike.

said he was hoping to have something to report to residents by Monday night but had not heard anything back from Republic Services/Allied Waste by 7 p.m. April 15, as requested.

“I have no further information for residents,” Zilka said. “We have no further information on when the trash pickup will resume.”

He had talked to David Kidder at Republic Services earlier in the day but Kidder did not make a reference as to when trash pickup would resume.

Zilka said he had received several calls from upset residents that they would consider paying more in the future for a different trash service.

Councilman Dan Bucci said the situation was not the fault of the mayor.

“This is totally out of your hands, out of your control,” Bucci said, adding that it was unfortunate local residents had to bear the brunt of a situation not in the area.  “I want to urge council members to keep this in mind when the next contract is up.”

Zilka said it the trash was not picked up by tomorrow, residents might want to consider bringing it back into the garage, due to the weather and the possibility that animals can get into the trash.
