Witherspoon Running for Re-Election

Councilman seeking 5th term in office.

Councilman-at-Large Craig Witherspoon has made it official: He will run in November to retain his Avon council-at-large seat.

If re-elected, it will be his fifth term on Avon’s City Council.

“With the election of a new mayor and at least three new Council members, I will provide stability and continuity on our City Council,” Witherspoon said. “My experience during the last eight years will be an asset in planning and maintaining the successful, common sense growth of Avon.”

Witherspoon has served as council president for four years and Council Pro Tem for four years, as well as having served on the Legal, Safety, and Parks and Recreation committees.

He has also been Council’s representative to the Avon seniors for 6 years.

“During my terms on Council, Avon has seen a new baseball stadium, the (French Creek) YMCA, the Cleveland Clinic, the I-90 interchange, leaf pick-up, expansion of parks, continued upgrades to police and fire departments,” Witherspoon said.

Witherspoon owned Avon’s Witherspoon Opticians for 32 years and is now the general manager of Berris Optical in Rocky River. He is also an adjunct faculty advisor at Cuyahoga Community College for their optical program. He is past president and member of the Cleveland Society of Ophthalmic Opticians and past president of the Opticians Association of Ohio.

He is a 33-year member and past president of Avon Lions Club and has served as President of the Avon Athletic Booster Club, He has worked on the levy committee to build Avon High School and has been a member of the Charter Review Committee. He was the recipient of the Lorain County Athletic Association Citizenship Award. 

Witherspoon and his wife, Carolyn have been residents of Avon for 38 years and during that time have been actively involved with Avon Schools, community organizations and city government. Their son, Brian, resides in Avon with his wife, Claudia, and their two children, Brandon and Bradley. Their son, Jim, resides in Michigan with his wife, Lana, and daughter Anna.
