260 Seniors Ready For Outdoor Graduation This Memorial Day Weekend

Approximately 260 graduates and their families are expected to fill Memorial Stadium Sunday as the Class of 2011 matriculates.

Approximately 260 students are readying for commencement on Sunday, May 29, and hoping the weather holds out for an outdoor ceremony. The ceremony is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

Should good weather prevail, the class of 2011 will hold the first outdoor ceremony in almost a decade. Multi-million dollar renovations to Memorial Stadium in 2010 allows for more visitors. The stadium also has improved bathrooms, better drainage and additional bathrooms.

Bob Scott previously said moving the time to the evening could be an option for future classes.

“When the seniors met with Dr. Walker the question of the lateness of the change and plans already in place were discussed,” Scott said in February. “The final solution was to keep the time and date as originally planned knowing that heat may be an issue. Evening will be a consideration in future years, with the decision being made early."

Longtime ALHS counselor LuAnn Shuster initially introduced the idea. This year's graduating class supported the idea. For the class of 2011, a ceremony in Memorial Stadium provides an opportunity to have more friends and relatives attend and take advantage of a rejuvenated stadium.

Bad weather including rain or excessive heat, could force the graduation back inside. The high school will utilize GradeBookWizard, an online site for parents, students and teachers to share information, access grades and review schedules, to let students and their families know by 8 a.m. on May 29, if the ceremony will be outdoors. Scott said the district has utilized GradeBookWizard effectively for communicating.
