AHS Opens ‘Flowers for Algernon’ Nov. 16

Play based on award-winning short story.

The Play Flowers For Algernon, directed by Preston Postle, is this weekend, Nov. 16 - 18 by the Avon High School Drama Club and International Thespian Troop 3329 at the Avon High School auditorium. (See cast and directors, below.)

Flowers for Algernon is based on the award-winning science fiction short story and novel by Daniel Keyes.

The show is about a mouse named Algernon and a man named Charlie Gordon. It tells Charlie's story as we follow him through a series of cutting edge lab experiments that dramatically transform his intellectual intelligence and triples his IQ.

Algernon is a laboratory mouse, which, prior to Charlie's transformation had undergone the same experiments.

The play stars Scott Little as Dr. Strauss, Matt Spiroff as Professor Nemue, Paige Yepko at Alice Kinnian, Andrew Flynn as Burt Seldon and Devin Hagedorn as Charlie Gordon.

The plays theme deals with the societal problems of how cruelly we can treat not only those with mental disabilities but anyone that we perceive to be different then ourselves.

Flowers is a wonderful tie in to the inaugural year of the Rachel's challenge program at Avon High. Rachel's Challenge,” Debbie Romanchok, president of the New Avon Choir and Drama booster group, said. The program was was started by the Family of Rachel Scott, the first victim of Columbine, and is a student empowerment program that aims to create a cultural of kindness and understanding.

According to director Preston Postle, the play will "challenge all in attendance to think before we speak and treat others with compassion."

Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m.

Presale tickets are on sale now, Monday through Friday at the Avon High School Office between 8 am and 4 pm. They are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. Tickets will also be available at the door for and additional $2 the day of the show. Children 5 and under are free.

The AHS auditorium is located at 37544 Detroit Road in Avon.
