Four Avon and Avon Lake high school students have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. Avon High School senior Madeline DiFillipo joins Avon Lake students Stephen Finnegan, Carly Mathewson and Nathaniel Rish among about 16,000 semifinalists announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corp.
Less than 1 percent of high school seniors make it to the semifinal level.
They are competing for approximately 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million. The National Merit Finalists are expected to be announced in February.
